Boys Basketball

The St. Laurence basketball program strives to teach young men life lessons and to prepare them for their futures through the game of basketball. With the dedication and hard work that it takes to be a member of this program, the student-athletes leave with a better understanding of how hard they must work to succeed in life.
Playing in the ultra-competitive Chicago Catholic League, the varsity team ended above .500 for the first time in over ten years. The Vikings finished the season incredibly strong with a ten-game
winning streak in 2016, including a 4th place finish in the CCL tournament. At the freshman level, the Vikings won conference, finishing with a 23-3 record, while the sophomores finished in second place with a 14-8 record. The overall improvement program-wide from 2014-2015 (31 wins-64 losses) season to
the 2015-2016 (70 wins-30 losses) was staggering and indicative of the bright future and direction of St. Laurence Basketball.

In April 2017, Coach Jim Sexton was named the 10th boys basketball coach in St. Laurence history. He served as Assistant Varsity Coach and Director of Player Development on the Viking Basketball staff for two seasons prior to earning the head job and held a major role in the team’s recent resurgence. To go with his assistant duties, Sexton also had experience filling in as an interim head coach for the Vikings. In addition to his role with St. Laurence, Sexton also co-founded Beyond The Arc Academy, a basketball club in Evergreen Park that coaches and trains over 250 boys and girls basketball players from 1st-8th grade.

Coach Sexton had a decorated playing career, as he played college basketball at Creighton University and was a member of the first-ever NCAA tournament team at UIC. In high school, he was a three-time All-Catholic League player and earned All-State honors his senior year.
