Cross Country and Track and Field

The cross country team has experienced a good deal of success throughout its history, including three straight Chicago Catholic League championships from 2006-2008. With a new coaching staff and the girls program in place, both the young men and women are looking to take the next step in returning to the upper echelon of the CCL and starting a new tradition in the GCAC.

Track and field is one of the more popular sports at St. Laurence, and it draws a large number of multi-sport athletes. A new coaching staff is in place for track and is looking to bring the Vikings back to the top of the CCL and GCAC standings. The future is bright for the program with the talent on the team and the experience of the coaching staff in speed and endurance training.

Head Coach

Coach Reed was hired to take over the track and cross country programs in July of 2016. Darrell brings a strong background in all areas. He comes to St. Laurence from Lincoln-Way East, where he spent the last four years as the associate head coach. Reed also has previous high school track and cross country experience at De La Salle and Jones College Prep.
In addition to his high school experience, Darrell is heavily involved in USA Track and Field. He coached with the Merrillville Track Club for 12 years beginning in 2003. Currently, Darrell is on the USATF Indiana Board of Directors and serves as their youth track and field chairperson. He was voted onto the Board in 2013 and appointed chairperson the same year.
Coach Reed has big plans for both programs. “One of my goals as a head coach is to teach our young men the value of a four-part philosophy: God, coach, athlete and community. In addition, my staff and I would like to challenge our young athletes to not be afraid to win — in the classroom, on the track and in life.”
