The CPD Enforcers will be playing the CFD Blaze this Sunday, May 19th at 3 p.m. in the First Responder Bowl.  Admission is $10, and children are free.  Tailgating is approved and will begin at noon.  All proceeds will benefit police and fire charities.

Parents and Students,

Make sure that your tuition and fees are current. As we approach the end of another school year, delinquent tuition and fees can cause a problem for seniors when dealing with prom and graduation.

There will be two sessions for Summer School at St. Laurence. The first session will begin on Monday, June 10- Friday, June 28 for first semester failures. The second session for second semester failures will be Monday, July 8- Friday, July 26. Students will be notified by their counselor if they have failed a course the week of June 3. If you have any questions about summer school, contact Mr. Muting at 708-458-6900, ext 212.

At the senior/parent meeting in April, we discussed many issues and concerns parents have during this time of year. I want to thank those parents who attended. Eighty-seven percent of the parents attended. Great turnout!!!

Prom season is approaching. Please speak to your son concerning prom and post-prom activities. Your son is responsible for his date’s behavior at school functions, including the prom. Please avoid any embarrassment at the prom by abiding by all school rules.

Every time I meet with the seniors I say the following: “Do not do anything to jeopardize your graduation.” Graduation is a time to celebrate what you have accomplished. It is a time to share with family and friends. All school rules are in effect until graduation. Please do not put me in a position where I would have to deny your son admission to the prom, attendance at baccalaureate mass or graduation.

Just a reminder to senior parents, you will only receive six tickets for the mass/graduation ceremony on Monday, May 20 at St. Albert the Great Church at 7:30 PM. Your son does not need a ticket. No one will be let into the church unless he or she has a ticket. Please do not put our ushers in a situation were they will have to turn you or a family member away because he or she does not have a ticket. If you do not have a ticket, do not come to the graduation ceremony. Parents who would like to sign-up for an extra ticket should contact Mrs. Hynes.

Please dress appropriately for the graduation ceremony and the Baccalaureate mass. Students should be dressed in shirt, tie, dress pants and dress shoes. No T-shirts, jeans or gym shoes are allowed at the ceremony. Parents should be dressed appropriately. These are special days for parents and students. Dress for success.

Senior final exams are May 13-15. The last day of school for seniors is May 15. Underclassmen exams are May 29-31. Last day of school is May 31.

On Saturday, May 4, the Laurenta Club is presenting an Evening with Elvis from 6:00-11:0 PM in the cafeteria. For more information check the Vike-Link.

On Saturday, May 18, the Fathers’ Clubs’ 13th annual Car Show will take place from 10:00-4:00 PM. At 4:00 PM, the Fathers’ Club will also be running a “Cow Business Raffle” for $10 a square. The top prize will be $5000. Bad Medicine will be performing at 4:00 in the school Beer Garden. Loving God, please remember the senior class. We thank you for their many accomplishments over the past four years. Inspire them to dedicate themselves to even more success as they move on from St. Laurence. Help our seniors to fulfill their responsibilities and to enjoy the present, while maintaining a healthy perspective on the future. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Lord. Amen.

In May, we celebrate Mothers’ Day. Please remember to thank your mother for what she does for you. The sacrifices that she and the rest of your family make to send you to STL are extraordinary. Think of all the little things that Mom does for you. Do you appreciate them or do you take them for granted? Tell your Mom how much you love and care about her.

Campus Ministry

There are a number of seniors who have not yet completed their twenty hours of Christian Service that are required for graduation. I know that many of them have completed their hours, but have not turned in their paperwork. Please encourage your son to take care of this paperwork as soon as possible. Currently a running total of Service Hours recorded is posted outside the Campus Ministry Office.

As we finish our Sixth Grade Retreat program for the year we recognize that the Peer Ministers led groups from fourteen different grade schools with a total of 254 boys and 233 girls participating. Thanks to them for using their leadership skills in this way. We also enjoyed working with our counterparts at Queen of Peace in this way throughout the year.

Our Peru mission trip is beginning to shape up with five students and three faculty members looking forward to the trip. We still have one or two interested members of the school community who may join us as well. Please keep us in your prayers as we work to link our two communities of the Blessed Edmund Rice family.

Library

Reminder to all seniors: if you have any material due to the library, you must return it by May 10th or you will not receive your diploma or transcripts until they are returned to the library.

Laurenta Club

Thank You to the Laurenta volunteers who helped at the Final Four. A big Thank You goes to Joe Ward, who coordinated the kitchen.

Our Officer Blessing will take place on Wednesday, May 1, at 6:00 PM in the Leadership Center. Dinner will follow, between 6:30 – 6:45. Please join us as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Loralies. Please contact Renee Karpiel (708) 598-3061 for tickets. The cost is $15.00.

Our last event of the year will be our Elvis – Memories of the King show, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013. The doors open at 6 PM, with the show beginning at 7 PM. This show is for all ages. Tickets are $15.00. You are able to bring your own food and beverages for the show. Please contact Sharon Ward at (708) 425-1276 for ticket information. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Please note that a Neil Diamond performer will also be there. Come and sing “Sweet Caroline” with us.

We would like to thank everyone who supported us during the year. If you attended one of our events, or purchased taffy apples, or an entertainment book, we sincerely thank you.

We would like to invite the SENIOR PARENTS to continue helping St. Laurence, by becoming a member of Laurenta Club. We are a group of alumni parents whose purpose is to raise funds for the Brothers who minister at St. Laurence, provide ongoing support for school activities, raise funds for particular groups of the STL community, and provide support for the parents’ clubs. Come and join us. Membership is open to all alumni parents.

We would like to extend our CONGRATULATIONS to the CLASS of 2013. WE WISH YOU MUCH SUCCESS IN LIFE!!!

Mothers’ Club

Our last planning meeting of the year will be Monday May 6th. We will be discussing the Installation Mass and dinner for the 2013-2014 officers. Join us for an intimate mass in the school chapel followed by dinner in the leadership center. Reservations are required by May 10th to Gina Novak @ 773-586-3161. The mass replaces the general meeting for May.

We will be having a Mother’s Club Apparel clearance sale during lunch periods May 6th – 10th. It will be in the foyer and free wrapping will be available for last minute Mothers Day gifts.

ALUMNI

Thanks to all who participated in the Deceased Alumni and Student Liturgy held on the 13th of April, especially to Fr. Norm Trela, who was the celebrant of the mass. This is a very special and meaningful event for the families of the deceased, and the Alumni Office is honored to offer this time of fellowship to the St. Laurence community.

The 24th annual St. Laurence Golf Open is being held on Friday, May 31 at the Water’s Edge Golf Club in south suburban Worth. Contact Ed Kozak or Adam Lotus to reserve your place at the outing.

Thanks to all for a fantastic school year. Here’s a brief look back at the highlights from the alumni office. In July we hosted the third annual alumni soccer match. In October we conducted the second alumni Flag Football tournament. In November we celebrated the tremendous history of Laurence athletics at our annual Viking Pride Dinner, which included enshrining new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Also in November the Alumni Basketball game took place. In April we hosted an Evening of Basket and Bucks with our terrific Final Four Extravaganza, and the next week we remembered our departed alums with the touching Deceased Alumni and Student Liturgy. On April 26 we all had fun at the annual senior barbeque. The Office of Alumni Relations truly appreciates your time, talent, and support for all the endeavors that we undertake.

To our terrific Class of 2013 – congratulations, men. You are now something special – you are St. Laurence Alumni!

Have a safe, restful, and happy summer break, everyone. We know that we all certainly deserve it.

Marge’s Miracles

Marge Szybowski was the mother of Brian ’2012 and Brett ’2016.  She was hospitalized since December 2012, and passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013.  A benefit is being held to help Marge’s family with medical and living expenses.  Be a part of Marge’s Miracles by attending the benefit on Saturday, April 27th from 4 – 10 p.m. at the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 2 Union Hall.   Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 4-12.  For tickets, contact Kim McGee (773) 405-8539 or John McGee (773) 405-8538.  Tickets will be sold in advance and at the door.
