Girls Basketball

As the first girls coaching hire in St. Laurence history, George brings a strong basketball pedigree to Viking athletics. He comes to St. Laurence from Queen of Peace High School, where he served as head basketball coach and athletic director. As head coach, George led a major change in direction of the program over a four year span that resulted in dramatic improvements year over year. After going 2-28 in his first year at the helm, the team increased their win total to 8 in 2014-15 and 19 in 2015-16. This past season, George led the team to a 28-4 record (the best record in school history), a GCAC regular season championship and a second consecutive IHSA Regional Championship. For his achievements, George was also named the 2016-17 Daily Southtown Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

To complement his experience at the high school level, George is the founder of the George Shimko Basketball School (GSBS), a top youth basketball organization which has developed over 1,500 male and female grade school, high school and college basketball players. The program’s guiding principle is “Good Students Make Better Athletes,” displaying his focus on developing the complete person, not just the athlete. George has also held general manager positions at the Chicago Bulls Basketball Schools and Illinois Basketball Academy.
