DSCN3263St. Laurence is the place “Where Leadership Begins.”  What does this phrase mean to you as the new Director of Leadership and how do you plan to implement this?

The phrase “Where Leadership Begins” means that St. Laurence is an institution that is dedicated to developing individuals who are capable of taking people where they don’t necessarily want to go…but ought to be.  As the Director of Leadership, I, along with the entire St. Laurence family, will work to develop leaders through team building, personal improvement and organizational advancement with the ultimate goal of helping students reach their full individual potential.

You’re a graduate of St. Laurence.  What made you decide to come back?

My 4 years as a student at St. Laurence were awesome!  I got involved in as many ways as I could and met some amazing people that are still my best friends today.  After college I spent 7 years coaching baseball and football here at STL and the environment I felt as a student was still evident.  The family atmosphere, the people here and the vision and direction St. Laurence is heading are the reasons I decided to return.

How has your previous experience prepared you for this position?

As a PE teacher and coach for the past 8 years I have had an opportunity to work with many student and athletes of different abilities, experiences and backgrounds.  As an educator and coach, my job was to take a group of individuals and get them to work together as a cohesive group toward a common goal. Our specific goal at St. Laurence is to have students Leave as a Leader.

What do you hope to accomplish as the Director of Leadership?

As the Leadership Director at St. Laurence, I hope to instill in the students qualities that are essential to leadership, such as: character, positivity, courage, humility, integrity, empathy, spirituality, etc.  I want our students to leave St. Laurence with the essence of what leadership comes down to: speaking up, standing up or acting upon something in which you believe.

What do you see as the value of the Leadership Program for St. Laurence students?

Leadership is a quality that is highly regarded and sought after in all walks of life.  It comes in different shapes and sizes and is seemingly difficult to achieve.  It is often thought that a great leader is one who is loud and boisterous or an individual who is rich and powerful.  In fact, we see acts of leadership more often than we think, but do not always know what to look for.  Our students will leave STL with the tools to recognize situations that require leadership and be able to apply the skills they have learned to accomplish the desired goal.

Anything else?

Former Leadership Director Mr. Scott, who has been a well-respected member of the St. Laurence family for many years, has left some big shoes to fill.  Mr. Scott has built a successful leadership program and paved the way for its sustained success.  I wish him luck and happiness in his future endeavors and thank him for his service, commitment and dedication to St. Laurence and its students.
