(Burbank, IL) St. Laurence is excited to announce the hiring of Liz Zia as the first girls lacrosse coach in school history.

Zia, a Chicago native and Mother McAuley alum, brings an impressive background that includes a combination of athletics, academics and coaching experience over the past several years. She is currently a senior at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and majoring in psychological science. Before her time at IIT, she started her collegiate career at St. Ambrose University.

“I am excited to kickstart the girls lacrosse team at St. Laurence,” says Coach Zia. “I am hoping to make an impact on this program through my coaching philosophy and dedication to the team.”

Prior to St. Laurence, Coach Zia accumulated seven years of coaching experience. She has previously served as head coach for the Illinois Girls Lacrosse Association, along with coaching camps for GameBreaker Lacrosse. As the current goalie of IIT’s lacrosse team, she holds the school record for save percentage. Throughout her collegiate career, she has been awarded multiple defensive player of the week awards, Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) All-Academic awards, and a Second Team MWLC All-Conference award.

“I am very excited to have Coach Zia launch our girls lacrosse program,” said St. Laurence Athletic Director Tim Chandler. “Her combination of playing and coaching experience will serve her well in her role as head coach. I was very impressed with Coach Zia’s passion for the sport and the maturity she possesses for someone her age. We have a number of girls eager to play lacrosse, and with Liz’s leadership, I am excited to see what our student-athletes will accomplish.”

St. Laurence will launch its first girls lacrosse season this spring, with over 30 girls already interested in joining. The program will begin with a junior varsity schedule in 2021, with plans of developing into a full varsity program in the near future. Girls lacrosse will join a variety of championship-level athletic programs offered by St. Laurence.
