The Daily Southtown has named St. Laurence High School the “Best Private School” in its Best of Chicago’s Southland for the third consecutive year.

Voted on by local readers, the Best of Chicago’s Southland contest has recognized the top businesses and organizations in the area for over 15 years.

Continuing as a trailblazer for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) on the southside, St. Laurence became the first school in the state of Illinois to earn the AdvancED STEM accreditation in 2017. In order to earn the certification, St. Laurence had to demonstrate adherence to the AdvancED STEM Standard as reflected by the school’s performance across 11 rigorous STEM Indicators. Achieving high scores across the indicators certifies that students have been equipped and trained to be innovative, creative and systematic problem-solvers across disciplines.

To go with the top-flight, 21st century STEM education, St. Laurence students receive added value through career explorer programs in medicine, entrepreneurship and electrical engineering and a free 10-week ACT prep course. Additionally, the school has emerged as the area’s leadership hub, providing an immersive leadership curriculum and countless opportunities for students to head organizations, attend conferences and grow as leaders.

The Vikings also boast one of the most successful athletic programs in the area. Last school year, the football team finished as IHSA State Semifinalists and Chicago Catholic League Champions for the second consecutive year, while the baseball team won its second consecutive Sectional title en route to a third place finish in the state. The Vikings were also Chicago Catholic League Champions in soccer, witnessed a resurgence in track and field and earned many individual honors across several other sports.

The 2017-18 school year holds even more excitement, as St. Laurence will welcome female students and transition to a coeducational institution. The school looks forward to extending the same level of excellence in STEM, leadership, athletics and more to young women all across Chicago’s southland.

St. Laurence will hold two Open Houses on Sunday, October 8 and Sunday, November 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Prospective students are also invited to Columbus Day Viking Visit shadow days on October 6 or 9, or to set up a separate one on the day of their choosing. Finally, St. Laurence will be holding several free grade school sports clinics throughout the first semester. The full list of clinics can be found at stlaurence.com/prospective.
