(Burbank, IL) St. Laurence High School is thrilled to announce the hiring of Adam Nissen as the new head varsity football coach. He will also join the school as a social studies teacher.

Nissen, an Evergreen Park resident and Christ the King parishioner, brings a unique background that combines excellence in academics and athletics to the football program. He most recently served as the Athletic Director at Immaculate Conception College Prep (ICCP), where he oversaw all athletic programs – including a football program that won two IHSA State Championships during his tenure. Prior to his time at ICCP, Nissen was an assistant football coach at Mount Carmel High School from 2014-2017, where the team qualified for the state playoffs every season. He was also the assistant head football coach at Urban Prep Academy for Young Men and Roberto Clemente High School from 2009-2014 and 2007-2008, respectively.

“I’m grateful to have this opportunity to lead the St. Laurence football program,” said Coach Nissen. “I want to thank President Joe Martinez, Principal Jim Muting, Athletic Director Tim Chandler and the interview committee for trusting me to lead such a prestigious program into the future. I’m excited to meet the players, parents, faculty and the rest of the St. Laurence football community and hit the ground running.”

Nissen has proven to be an exemplary educator with 11 years of experience in the classroom, teaching classes such as AP World History, AP U.S. History and African-American History. He was named both “Teacher of the Year” and “Staff Member of the Year” three consecutive times at Urban Prep from 2011 to 2013, and has demonstrated a willingness to be an active member of the school community by moderating several different clubs and organizations. Nissen earned his master’s degree in inner city studies from Northeastern Illinois University, and holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education from the University of Iowa. He also has a Type 09/U.S. History and World History.

“I am extremely excited to have Coach Nissen lead our football program and to welcome Adam, his wife and his daughter to the St. Laurence family,” said St. Laurence Athletic Director Tim Chandler. “Adam has an outstanding record of success both on and off the field, and he has a proven record of putting his student-athletes first and developing meaningful relationships with his players while also holding them accountable. Coach Nissen impressed the committee every round with his detailed vision for the program, his embodiment of our athletic department core values, and his desire to engage all Viking stakeholders, past and present. He has seen firsthand what it takes to win state championships, and I am thrilled to add a head coach of Adam’s pedigree to our athletic department.”

Nissen emerged as the top choice for the position after an exhaustive interview process with several highly qualified candidates. Among members of the interview committee were 11-year NFL veteran Tim Grunhard ‘86, St. Laurence Board Member and former Northwestern football player Jake Gregus ’09 and Illinois high school football coaching legend Frank Lenti, who currently serves as a special advisor to the St. Laurence football program. Athletic, academic and administrative leaders in the school were also part of the committee.
