It may only be February, but the St. Laurence Viking Baseball team is already racking up preseason honors from some of the top prep sports publications in the country.

The 2018 Chicago Catholic League Blue Champion Vikings return several players from last year’s roster, propelling the squad to a #42 overall ranking in Perfect Game’s Preseason High School Top 50.

The team also received honors from MaxPreps, as it was named the best high school baseball team in Illinois. From the article:

“The Gatorade State Player of the Year Matt McCormick returns to the lineup this year. He’s an All-American candidate at catcher. Coach Peter Lotus returns nearly his entire team from a club that won 30 games in 2018. St. Laurence also has one of the top sophomores in the Midwest in South Carolina commit Vytas Valincius.”

On the individual side, McCormick received additional recognition as the best player in Illinois:

“The Gatorade State Player of the Year in Illinois as a junior, McCormick was the Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year as well. He batted .510 with 17 doubles, six triples and nine home runs with 48 RBIs while earning a spot as catcher on the MaxPreps Junior All-American Team.”

The Viking Baseball team is led by Head Coach Pete Lotus, who is widely regarded as one of the best baseball coaches in Illinois. Lotus is a 5-time Lawless Award Winner, given to the most outstanding coach in the very competitive Chicago Catholic League. He has developed countless collegiate baseball players, and also serves as St. Laurence’s Director of Strategic Development.

The Vikings open the season on March 18 against Simeon. On top of their difficult in-state schedule, the team was also invited to Prep Baseball Report’s SuperPrep Series High School Baseball Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of March and the ACC Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.
