Public Safety

In partnership with the Village of Bedford Park, the Public Safety program gives students direct access to the professionals and systems behind fire safety, law enforcement and emergency response.

Through field visits, interactive demonstrations with first responders and classroom instruction alongside working professionals, you’ll build more than knowledge – you’ll build the judgment and discipline the field demands.

Introduction to Public Safety [prerequisite] — students explore the fundamentals of firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical services. From there, two specialization paths are available.

Intro to Criminal Justice — a dual-credit class with Lewis University that provides an overview of the function, structure and historical development of the major institutions within the criminal justice system. Theories about crime and victimization are presented, and the interrelationship between law enforcement practices, court processes and correctional operations at the local, state and national levels are examined. Students will consider the ways in which policing, courts and correctional practices impact citizens’ perception of the justice system and how citizen participation, political and economic factors influence the policies and practices within criminal justice agencies.

Fire Science — covers fire behavior, prevention and emergency management, preparing students for the technical and human demands of the profession.

Dual credit is available, so you can leave high school with college credits already earned in a field where preparation and credentials matter from day one. Graduates of this program leave with practical skills, professional exposure and a clear sense of what it means, and what it takes, to serve their community.
